At its Wednesday meeting, Duke Student Government Senate hosted Steve Nowicki, dean and vice provost for undergraduate education, and discussed merit scholarships.
Nowicki's talk focused on inclusion, engagement and curriculum at Duke. During the public forum, Nowicki also spoke about the future possibility of redirecting Duke endowment money from merit scholarships toward need-based aid.
Executive Vice President Ilana Weisman, a senior, is the co-chair of the access and outreach advisory group for the Office of Undergraduate Scholars and Fellows. This group seeks to expand the resources of the Office of Undergraduate Scholars and Fellows to all undergraduates. Weisman said that she was excited about the possibility of changes to the University's financial aid.
“I would love to see our financial aid policy become even more like our top peer institutions,” Weisman said. “Exploring other options, whether it’s getting rid of unsubsidized loans, or things like that would be tangible steps if we could re-channel endowment funds.”
