Freshman spotlight: Jarvis

Meet Brooke Huang, an incoming Jarvis dorm resident from nearby Cary, NC. This interview is part of a summer blog series profiling one Class of 2018 member from each of the 14 East Campus dorms. Look out for the rest of the blogs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays leading up to Orientation Week.

Major: Undecided

Summer plans: "I traveled to China and Hong Kong to visit relatives. I was there for about a month."

Favorite type of weather: "Rainy days. I just find them more calming."

Favorite book or literary work: "The Joy Luck Club" by Amy Tan. "It's a story about chinese mothers and daughters and i find it really relatable and it has a lot of good stories in it.

Guilty pleasure: "America's Next Top Model" and "Project Runway."

Impression from first visit to Duke: "I really liked the gothic architecture. People call it the gothic wonderland—thats definitely a good way to put it. I live in Cary and I've probably visited a lot of times to see the gardens. The first time I did a real college visit was last year."

What she will add to the Jarvis community: "I hope that I can be a supportive and reliable hallmate to everyone. I'm always open to making new friends and giving honest advice."

Things she's excited to try out at Duke: "I'm definitely looking forward to art classes. I mostly do some painting but I dabble in a little bit of everything."

What she's most nervous about at Duke: "I'm nervous about meeting new people but i’m also excited for it."

If she could be famous for one thing, what would it be: "I'd want to be like an Asian Anna Wintour. Well-dressed, powerful and scary."

Any last thoughts: "I look forward to meeting everyone!"
