HALFTIME: Wake Forest 36, Duke 33

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - In their first game in eight days, the No. 4 Blue Devils came out of the gates slowly, missing seven of their first eight shots. After battling back to take a four-point lead, Duke finds itself trailing at the half for just the second time all season.

Here are some observations from the first half:

  • Wake Forest opened the game in a zone defense and was able to hold Duke scoreless for the first 3:43 of the contest. Redshirt sophomore Marshall Plumlee knocked down two free throws to score Duke's first points of the night.
  • The Blue Devils looked rusty from distance as well, shooting just 2-of-12 from beyond the arc against the Demon Deacon zone.
  • After trailing 14-6, the Blue Devils got themselves going by crashing the offensive glass. Duke recorded nine offensive rebounds in the period.
  • Wake Forest got Duke in foul trouble by attacking the basket. The Demon Deacons got in the bonus with 9:30 left in the half and shot 14 free throws in the period, making nine.
  • Freshman forward Jabari Parker missed his first four shots of the game and struggled to finish in the paint. Shortly after making his first two shots of the evening, the Chicago native picked up his second foul with 7:26 left on a charge and did not return.
  • After missing his first three shots, redshirt sophomore Rodney Hood got going by attacking the zone from the high post, making his next three attempts. He finished the half with 11 points to lead Duke and gave the Blue Devils their first lead of the game with 3:10 left in the half after a pair of free throws.
  • Freshman guard Matt Jones sparked a 10-0 Duke run toward the end of the half with his defensive intensity and hustle. The spurt was capped by a Quinn Cook 3-pointer that gave the Blue Devils a 33-29 advantage.
  • Led by sophomore guard Codi Miller-McIntyre, Wake Forest responded to Duke's 10-0 spurt to close the half with a 7-0 run of its own. Miller-McIntyre, who missed the Feb. 4 matchup between the teams, had eight points and four assists in the first half, including a buzzer-beating layup to end the half.
