2014 NCAA tournament preview: Stanford

Stanford Cardinal

Record: 21-12

Head coach: Johnny Dawkins (5th season)

Season summary: It was a solid season for the Cardinal who are coached by former Duke standout Johnny Dawkins and are led by junior guard Chasson Randle (18.7 PPG) and senior forward Dwight Powell (14.2 PPG). Stanford finished sixth in the Pac-12 during the regular season and upset third-seeded Arizona State in the Pac-12 tournament before falling to future tournament champion UCLA in the semifinals. Stanford has also pulled off upsets during the season against ranked Connecticut, Oregon, and UCLA teams. Ranking near the middle of Division I in most major statistical categories, the Cardinal has found a variety of different ways to snag upset victories this season but will not overpower you in any one aspect of the game.

How they make a run: Randle takes it to the next level shooting the ball and Powell uses his speed in the paint to help the Cardinal catch opponents napping.

How they falter: The Cardinal are not as athletic and skilled as other teams in the field, and the lack of a star leader could ultimately be their downfall.
