Thoughts on the AP Poll: Week 13

Duke Moves Up One Spot

Following two conference wins over Miami and Florida State, the Blue Devils moved up to the No. 17 spot in the poll. Counting its win Monday against No. 18 Pittsburgh, Duke has now won five and a row and will need to use their momentum as they continue its toughest week of their schedule, with a trip to No. 2 Syracuse on Saturday. Duke had struggled on the road this season before the win in Pittsburgh, but it is crucial that Duke play well in order to keep their chances of winning the ACC and getting a top seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Michigan Climbs into the Top-10

After losing the Player of the Year to the draft and a preseason All-American in Mitch McGary to injury, many thought the Wolverines wouldn’t be able to compete in a stacked Big-10 Conference. Michigan has proved everyone wrong however, winning three straight games against top-10 opponents. After beating Wisconsin two weeks ago, the Wolverines took down Iowa State earlier in the week and defeated then No. 3 Michigan State on the road. Michigan moved up 11 spots to No. 10 in the poll and find themselves atop the Big-10. The Wolverines' strong play and ability to overcome adversity is a testament to John Beilein, who has to be an early favorite for Coach of the Year.

Arizona and Syracuse Remain On Top

Both teams notched easy wins this past week to remain undefeated, but have a tougher week approaching. Arizona has two road tests against Stanford and California, and Syracuse faces the Blue Devils in one of the most anticipated college basketball games of the season. Both teams are expected to stay undefeated, but don’t be surprised if one of them gets upset.

Texas Ranked for First Time Since 2010-2011 Season

Michigan wasn't the only team to win three straight against ranked opponents. After taking down Iowa State last week, the Longhorns notched wins over then-No. 22 Kansas State 67-64 and then-No. 24 Baylor. The streak puts Texas in the AP Poll at the No. 25 spot. It is the Longhorns' first time being ranked since the 2010-2011 season. Unfortunately, their spot in the AP Poll may not last very long, as they have a tough matchup against No. 6 Kansas on Saturday.
