Cream of the Crop: Women's basketball update

The schedule was empty during the week with students home for winter break in between semesters and celebrating the holidays with their families. Four of the top five teams returned to action this weekend, with No. 3 Duke remaining idle until the new year begins. The schedules will return to normal as the calendar turns to 2014, when teams begin conference play.

In their first game as a member of the American Athletic Conference, No. 1 Connecticut defeated Cincinnati 67-34. The Huskies scored the first 16 points of the game, although the scrappy Bearcats did not give in. Cincinnati held the potent Connecticut offense to just 41 percent shooting from the field. Sophomore Breanna Stewart led the undefeated Huskies with 12 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth straight double-double.

No. 2 Notre Dame also remained unbeaten with a 70-58 victory against Oregon State. The Beavers provided a stiff test for the Fighting Irish, as Notre Dame went into halftime facing a two-point deficit. They began the second half on a 6-0 run, however, and never relinquished the lead after that. Oregon State held the Notre Dame offense—which leads the nation in both field goal shooting and 3-point shooting—well below its season average, but the Irish maintained their poise despite a rough start and avoided the upset.

No. 4 Stanford rolled past Fresno State 86-54 on the strength of their 3-point shooting. The Cardinal shot 8-of-15 from beyond the arc in the second half as they utilized a 26-2 run at the start of the second half to put the game out of reach. All-American Chiney Ogwumike notched a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to pace Stanford.

No. 5 Tennesse rebounded from a loss to the Cardinal last week by routing Lipscomb 110-42. The Lady Volunteers shot a season-high 57.9 percent from the field while outrebounding the Lady Bisons by 30 in a dominant performace. Six players scored in double figures for Tennessee, but Isabelle Harrison led the way with 26 points and 15 rebounds in just 18 minutes.

Game to Watch: No. 5 Tennessee at No. 19 Georgia, Sunday Jan. 5, 4:00 p.m.

Key ACC Matchup: No. 3 Duke at Georgia Tech, Sunday Jan. 5, 2:00 p.m.

Upset Alert: No. 19 Georgia over No. 5 Tennessee. After opening their SEC slate with No. 16 LSU, the Lady Volunteers will have to go on the road to take on another ranked opponent, and the 11-1 Bulldogs are no pushover.
