Early decision applications up by 26 percent

The number of early decisions applicants rose 26 percent from last year, according to a press release from Duke News.

In 2012, the University received 2,540 applications for its binding early decision program. This year, that number jumped to 3,191. Not only is this the highest number of early applicants ever received, it also represents the highest increase in a single year, the release reported.

"We’re very pleased with this increase in interest in Duke,” Christoph Guttentag, dean of undergraduate admissions, said in the release.

Because the early process is binding, students must be prepared to enroll if they are accepted.

“It’s not always easy for students to be ready to make this level of commitment to a college so early in their senior year,” Guttentag said in the release. “The breadth of the pool this year reflects an understanding of the value of a Duke education and the Duke experience among a wide range of students.”

Of the early applicants last year, 753 were admitted. This group comprised 44 percent of the total incoming class.

Early decision applicants can expect to learn their admissions results in mid-December.
