Duke's gaze shifts from basketball to football

Last night, Duke opened its 2013-14 basketball season with a convincing 111-77 victory against Davidson at Cameron Indoor Stadium. But when head coach Mike Krzyzewski stepped away from the microphone at his postgame press conference, he spoke about a team his Blue Devils would not see for months.

Generic Script

The opening night of the basketball season was met with much anticipation, but that only rivals the buzz on campus this week for Duke's matchup with N.C. State, slated for 4 p.m. at Wallace Wade Stadium. Sitting at 6-2 and bowl eligible for the second straight year, the Blue Devils can secure their first winning season since 1994 with a victory against the Wolfpack today.

It has been dubbed "Beat State Week" at Duke, and students have been out in force to assure Saturday's game was met with a gameday atmosphere the Blue Devils rarely see at home football games. The football program even made these slightly suggestive T-shirts for the first 3,000 students at today's contest.

The team has received an outpouring of support, even from members of the men's basketball program. Tight end Braxton Deaver tweeted that two of his close friends, Tyler Thornton and Josh Hairston, would be on hand for Saturday's game. Duke basketball players have a knack for coming out and supporting the football program at their biggest games, so don't be surprised to see a whole crop of them in the stands this afternoon.
