Mike Cragg a candidate for Rice athletic director opening

Duke's Mike Cragg has interviewed for the vacant Rice athletic director position, a source confirmed to The Chronicle.

Cragg has worked at Duke since 1987 and in 2008 was promoted to senior associate athletic director. His most notable work has been with the men's basketball team's Legacy Fund, which The Chronicle reported last year is now fully endowed. Cragg is integral to the team's daily operations and scheduling.

He has also worked on renovations to Wallace Wade Stadium while he is also very involved with the Duke Forward program that has $250 million allotted for sports, including renovations to both Wallace Wade and Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Before current Duke athletic director Kevin White replaced Joe Alleva in 2008, Cragg was the only internal candidate considered for the position.

Rice's previous AD, Rick Greenspan, resigned in June.

The Houston Chronicle, which first reported Cragg's interview, notes a decision may be soon as Rice officials have said they would like a replacement by early September.

Here are some recent stories from The Chronicle that have involved Cragg:
