Virginia Tech football preview

For head coach Frank Beamer’s 27th season, he will look to turn around a team that missed the eight-win mark for the first time since 1997.

Quarterback Logan Thomas, seemed poised to have a breakout junior season last year following an impressive sophomore campaign but failed to garner any momentum. He tossed 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, completing just 51 percent of his throws. In order to lead the Hokies to a successful campaign, he will have to regain his form under new offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler.

Once again though, Virginia Tech boasts one of the more impressive defensive units in the ACC and nation. Cornerback Antone Exum, following his return from an injury, will lead an experienced secondary. Until his return, five-star recruit Kendall Fuller will take his place. Including Exum, the Hokies return nine starters on a unit that ranked 18th in the nation in total defense. Up front, senior defensive end James Gayle will lead an upperclassmen-heavy group that returns over three-quarters of its sack production.
