Miami football preview

Miami struggled on the offensive end at times during its 2012 campaign, but will return 10 offensive starters this year. Stephen Morris proved himself a dependable quarterback during his first year as a starter, and freshman running back Duke Johnson was the Hurricanes’ biggest threat last season. Johnson racked up 947 rushing yards despite getting no more than 16 carries in a game all season.

The duo’s return, combined with a deep receiving corps, should make Miami’s offense more potent than last season. Johnson is a dark horse Heisman candidate, and his presence should offset the lack of a big playmaker at wide receiver.

Hurricanes’ offensive line coach Art Kehoe boasts the best group he has seen at Miami since 2001.

Miami’s defense is the real question mark heading into 2013 season. Last year’s squad ranked 82nd in scoring defense, giving up 30.5 points per game.

But the Hurricanes return nine starters on the defensive side and also welcome a true freshman linebacker in Alex Figueroa, who could secure a starting spot. Freshman cornerback Artie Burns should also see playing time in a deep Miami secondary.

If the Hurricanes’ defense can gel and the offense can progress and make sure Johnson gets his touches, then Miami could return to its former role as an ACC championship contender.
