San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro is delivering the Democratic National Convention’s keynote address.
The responsibility is certainly a party honor, but perhaps more importantly, the title has historically been a political stepping stone, a sign of greater things to come. Barack Obama – then a junior senator from Illinois – delivered the keynote address in 2004.
So who is Castro? A 37-year old Stanford and Harvard Law graduate who strongly supports NAFTA and is credited with maintaining a balanced city budget as mayor of San Antionio. More importantly, however, Castro may be just the figure to energize what experts say will be a critical voting bloc for the ultimate winner of Election 2012: Latino voters.
Known as a family man, Castro was introduced by his brother, Joaquin Castro, tonight.
“I’m proud that my brother has achieved his dreams, but I'm even more proud of the work he's done to help others achieve theirs,” Joaquin said.
If Joaquin’s words hold true, Julian Castro may be the Democrats’ next big thing.
