Calipari Says Duke Caused Kentucky to Lose

Generic Script

This missed our radar yesterday, but it should still be immortalized on the blog: Apparently, at a speaking engagement yesterday John Calipari blamed Kentucky's Elite Eight loss to West Virginia on... Duke?

From the Birmingham News:

Calipari suggested Kentucky lost to West Virginia in the Elite Eight last season in part because the Wildcats were looking ahead to Duke in the Final Four.

"Do you know how badly we wanted to play Duke?" Calipari said. "I think that's why we played so badly against West Virginia. We wanted Duke so badly we couldn't see straight."

Chalk this up to one of the only times in sports history that a coach has blamed not his team for a loss—nor the opposing team—but a team they hadn't even played yet.

As ESPN's Diamond Leung puts it:

Since the Wildcats couldn't see straight in looking past the Mountaineers, maybe that contributed to a 4-for-32 night from beyond the arc?
