Summer League Buzz: Scheyer Injures Eye

Generic Script

Duke fans probably scratched their heads in confusion this morning when they looked at the box score from Tuesday night's NBA summer league game between the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors and saw that Jon Scheyer played only 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

After the undrafted former Blue Devil got 29 minutes of burn and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer in the Heat's victory over the New Orleans Hornets Sunday, he seemed poised to play a major role on the summer squad and challenge for one of Miami's remaining roster spots.

But Scheyer's quest to make the team took an unfortunate turn last night.

He suffered an injury to his right eye during the second quarter of the game, explaining his lack of playing time. The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported today that Scheyer was taken to a Las Vegas hospital after he was hit near the eye by Golden State's Joe Ingles.

Scheyer apparently sustained a laceration of the eyelid, and five stitches were required to close the wound according to the Sun Sentinel.

It's unclear if the injury will keep Scheyer on the sidelines for the remaining summer league games, but hopefully he will be good to go when the Heat take on the Detroit Pistons tonight at 10:30.

Check back here tomorrow for an update on Scheyer's status.
