DUU backs Pixar film series on Main West

Next Wednesday night, students on their way to study in Perkins Library might catch a glipmse of Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl on the Main West Quadrangle.

At its weekly meeting Tuesday night, the Duke University Union executive board approved an event proposal from Freewater Presentations for a film series to be shown on the quad.

The series, which will begin March 25 and run each Wednesday night until April 15, will feature popular Pixar Animation Studios films in the chronological order of their release: "Toy Story," "Monsters, Inc.," "Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles."

"We're hoping to screen the movies on Wednesday nights instead of weekends because we're hoping to create a family atmosphere to encourage all of the Duke community to come," said Freewater Co-director Matt Tolson, a senior.

The board voted to allot $6,000 to the event, an amount that will cover movie rights, fleece blankets and free food such as hot dogs and hamburgers.

Tolson added that this figure was a "high-ball estimate," and that both the amount of food and the number of blankets provided could vary.

Union members also prepared for the transition from outgoing to incoming leadership.

"The learning curve that you get in these couple of months is really important and can make a big difference in the Fall semester," said outgoing President Chamindra Goonewardene, a senior.

President-elect Zachary Perret, a junior, asked new and old executive members to work together to draft financial proposals for the upcoming semester.

"There's one more meeting left under the old administration," Perret said. "What we need from all of you is a realistic budget from each committee. You don't have to know all the specifics of what you're doing the whole semester, but please try to outline... as much of the costs as you can."

In other business:

DUU ran out of free tickets to see Frank Warren, the founder of the PostSecret Project, after they had been available for approximately four hours Monday, said Major Speakers Chair Will Benesh, a sophomore. Warren will speak tonight in Page Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

Duke Royale, a campus-wide cocktail party open to students, administrators and faculty, will be held Thursday, April 2 at the Doris Duke Center in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens.
