Cutcliffe Dismisses Mackey, Suspends James

One day after signing 27 recruits to play for Duke, head coach David Cutcliffe transformed into a disciplinarian again.

Freshman linebacker Trent Mackey, who played in 11 games last year, was dismissed from the program for a violation of team standards and is no longer enrolled at Duke.

Randez James, a four-star cornerback who redshirted last season, will be suspended for the duration of spring practice. James' status will be reeavluated at the end of the spring. If James doesn't meet Cutcliffe's standards, his loss could seriously impact Duke's defense next year, but the head coach has a history of letting players back on the team. Last year, standout offensive lineman Cameron Goldberg was suspended indefinitely in April and was reinstated to the team in May en route to a fine senior season.
