Barone moves past 100 wins

Junior John Barone took three matches, including his 100th career win, Saturday as the Blue Devils beat Eastern Michigan, Gardner-Webb and Appalachian State in Boiling Springs, N.C.

With the three victories, Barone moved up to second all-time on the Duke wins list.

He needs just four more wins to break the school's all-time record and to shatter the single-season mark of 35 wins that he set last year.

And while the weekend belonged to Barone, Duke, as a team, thrived as well, scoring a 22-20 win in the opener, a 31-15 victory to follow and a 22-18 triumph to close the day.

"We wrestled some amazing matches today," head coach Clar Anderson said. "I'm really pleased with the performance today. To have so many guys have to bump up a weight class and perform as well as they did is incredible. These were three great wins for us today."

Duke moved to 9-3 and 8-1 in non-conference competition on the season.

The Blue Devils return to the mats in two weeks when they travel to take on Virginia and Virginia Tech Feb. 15. After a non-conference match against Campbell Feb. 21, Barone could break the school mark at the ACC championship in Blacksburg, Va. March 7.
