Duke continues winning ways over Maryland

No. 11 Duke had not beaten Maryland in College Park since 2000. Before Sunday, that is.

Freshman Ashley Rape headed in a goal in the 43rd minute and senior Cassidy Powers collected her fifth shutout of the season to lift the Blue Devils to a 1-0 win over the Terrapins at Ludwick Field.

Duke (11-2-1, 3-1-1 in the ACC) controlled play on the offensive end, outshooting Maryland (5-7-1, 1-4) 14-9 on the match. Junior Elisabeth Redmond, who was named ACC Player of the Week Tuesday for her two-goal effort against Wake Forest Thursday, led the way with five shots.

But it was Rape who was the only one to connect on the afternoon.

"Sometimes goals are almost like double goals, when you score late in the half like that," head coach Robbie Church said. "It gave us a 1-0 lead heading into halftime and we were very confident with that lead."

With the win, Duke moved up to No. 9 in the national rankings. The Blue Devils return to the field Sunday at 1 p.m. against Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla.
