Jones named to elite punter list

Sophomore punter Kevin Jones was named to the watch list for the Ray Guy Award, honoring the top punter in the nation, Tuesday.

In Duke's three games, Jones has been forced to punt 11 times. His punts have averaged 45.1 yards, tied for the best in the ACC and 11th in the country.

Five of Jones' kicks have fallen inside the 20-yard line.

In the third quarter of the Blue Devils' 41-31 win over Navy Saturday, Jones squibbed a 38-yard punt to pin the Midshipmen at their own 1-yard line. Navy went three-and-out and Duke scored the go-ahead touchdown on its next possession to earn a lead it would not give back.

After Duke's opening week win over James Madison, Jones led the country with a 53.5-yard average.

Jones was one of 46 punters named to the list, which will be trimmed to 10 in early November. He is one of eight sophomores among that group, which also includes four other punters from the ACC.

The winner will be revealed live on national television Dec. 11. The Ray Guy Award was first presented in 2000, and was won last year by Georgia Tech's Durant Brooks.
