DUU officials discuss ideas to market brand

Duke's largest student-run organization is becoming a more perfect Union-at least according to the Duke University Union's president.

"We've come together as a cohesive group," said President Chamindra Goonewardene, a senior. "We're 14 committees working as one unit."

At their weekly administrative meeting, Union officials discussed plans to raise awareness about the organization.

Junior Adam Barron, co-director of marketing, said the effort would focus especially on East Campus but would also extend to West Campus.

The group has considered commissioning 6-foot tall "DUU" letters to be placed on the West Campus Plaza or Main West Quadrangle, Barron said.

Representatives from each committee also updated the body on this Fall's Union-sponsored events, including Joe College Day and "Gala de Plata," a Spanish-themed semi-formal event to be held at the Nasher Museum of Art Sept. 24.

Major Speakers Director Will Benesh, a sophomore, said DUU plans to commemorate election week by bringing in guest speakers from opposite ends of the political spectrum.

DUU is also working with College Republicans and Duke Democrats, as well as several other student organizations, to develop plans for an election-viewing party Nov. 4, said Vice President of Programming Gabriela Borges, a junior.

In other business:

Representatives from the Women's Institute for Secondary Education and Research presented plans for this year's WISER Week to be held Sept. 29 to Oct. 3. The group seeks co-sponsorship with DUU for its LiveWISER concert.

"We don't want [the concert] to be merely entertainment," said junior Jacky Sims, who coordinates WISER's fundraising. "We want people to be thinking about our message. It's more than just a benefit concert."
