Duke did not get its man.
The Blue Devils' first choice, Navy head coach Paul Johnson, has agreed to take
over the top job at Georgia Tech, Navy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk
confirmed Friday.
"Paul is fixated on what Paul wants to do and that's the next step and new
challenges at Georgia Tech," Gladchuck told ESPN.com. "We appreciate what Paul
has done and we'll always remember him as one of the great coaches in Navy
history. But we're very respectful of his wishes for new challenges at Georgia
Tech."
Johnson had reportedly received offers from Duke and Southern Methodist before
accepting the position with the Yellow Jackets. At this point, the Blue Devils
have only formally interviewed one other candidate, Grambling State head coach
and former Duke assistant Rod Broadway.
Tennessee offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe and Boston College offensive
coordinator Steve Logan have also been named as possible candidates for the
Duke job, but sources have confirmed that Duke had not formally contacted them
concerning the job before Friday.
