Swimming and diving teams snag victories

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams snagged a pair of victories last weekend at the Patriot Invitational. The three-day event, which ended Sunday, took place at George Mason's Aquatic & Fitness Center, with 10 schools competing for team points.

The Blue Devil women finished up the weekend in second place with 753 points. Freshman Shannon Beall won the 200 meter butterfly, and junior Danielle Spearman took third place in the 200 meter backstroke Sunday.

The team of sophomore Erin Frizzell, freshman Meredith Bannon, Beall and Spearman grabbed second place in Saturday's 200 medley relay.

The Duke men took third place with 540 points. Freshman Eric Winnard grabbed a pair of wins for three meter diving and 100 meter freestyle events. Junior Scott Champagne took third in the 400 individual medley, and senior Jay Ashenfelter placed fourth.

Head coach Dan Colella said he was extremely pleased with the way both teams performed and set the tone for the rest of the season.

"We had a really good weekend," Colella said. "It gave us an opportunity to do a lot of racing. We were much further down the road in terms of performance at this point this year than last year."
