Fall Fashion How-To

Just like the fall fashion season, our beloved fall tailgate season is already in full swing. But since you can't wear your tracksuit jackets over '80s prom dresses to class and keep a straight face-especially without that morning mimosa-you might want to invest in some fall weekday wear. Pick and choose from recess' list of top investments for a stylish fall-because though all the world's a stage, costumes are better reserved for the beer-soaked Blue Zone.

1. Boots. Uggs are out, but 1970s staple Frye "campus boots" are in. Wear them with jeans, ethereal dresses, flowy skirts or denim minis. Also try cowboy boots or slouchy suede boots-economical versions are available at Urban Outfitters.

2. White blouse. It's always been a wardrobe staple, but revamped comebacks with romantic ruffles and bloused sleeves make it of-the-moment.

3. Brown turtleneck. Long-sleeved or short, cotton or cashmere, this is the fall workhorse. Skinny-belt it in a matching shade to channel posh dress-up looks seen on Alberta Ferretti catwalk.

4. Knit top. A sparkly, seventies-style, Lurex-infused knit top a la Missoni. Wear with worn jeans and a bold necklace for a fresh-from-the-set-of-the-OC brand of date-worthy chic.

5. Black black black. Tops, skirts, pants, dresses-you name it, you should have at least one in black. Envelope pushers: Eva Longoria recently wore a huge black sweater as a dress, cinching the waist to create a shape and making it sexy with skyscraping heels.
