After several rounds of back-and-forth discussion about Duke's financial obligations to Durham, the University has agreed to pay the city a total of more than $1 million.
The major dispute between the two parties involved $1.4 million in impact fees the city said Duke owed for recent construction. The University filed a protest, and the bill was eventually lowered to about $800,000. Duke plans to file for a further reduction.
After several weeks of wrangling, Duke volunteered to pay a one-time payment of $153,000 for police and fire resources. The city had asked for $1 million.
Duke also paid its customary annual sum of $300,000 for fire protection.
