K-ville tenting policy unveiled

Undergraduates hoping to see the men's basketball team play the University of Maryland and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this season will have to learn a few new rules about tenting before they hammer their stakes in Krzyzewskiville.

Among the revisions from last year's basketball admissions policy are changes in the number of people required in a tent at night during white tenting, the length of the tenting season and the rules for walk-up lines for both walk-up and tenting games. Head Line Monitor Donald Wine will clarify the policies when he presents the proposed changes to the Duke Student Government Wednesday night.

The two designated tenting games of the season, against Maryland and Carolina, are scheduled respectively for Feb. 22 and March 6--the first Saturday of spring break. The March 3 game against the Georgia Institute of Technology has been designated as this year's Senior Game.

This past spring, administrators called for a review of Krzyzewskiville procedures, expressing concern that last year's six-week tenting period was too long. This year's schedule calls for a three-week blue tenting period before the Maryland game and a two-week period before the Carolina game.

"People could potentially be out there for two and a half months--something I had definite concerns with," Wine said, accounting for the shortened three-week blue tenting period for Maryland.

A significant change in white tenting procedures is that two tent members must now be present in K-ville between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights and between 2 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. In previous years, white tenting only required that one tenter be present at all times.

Additionally, tenters meeting the requirements to attend a game will now be able to procure their wristbands at midnight on the day of the game, instead of having to return to K-ville the morning of the game, as in years past.

Wine's new policy also details new procedures for students choosing to walk up for one of the two tenting games, allowing for bathroom breaks between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Now, students may sign out with the on-duty line monitor for 15-minute bathroom breaks up to twice a day.

Four hours before tenting games, bracelets will be distributed to those in the walk-up line provided they have made all their checks. Students will not be able to leave the line until game time unless the line monitor calls a grace period.

Policies for walk-up games have also changed. Last year groups of up to 12 students were allowed to register together, with only 25 percent of the group required at all times. This year groups are limited to six people, 50 percent of whom must be present at all times.

Although administrators and athletics officials, including Men's Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski, met with students last year and proposed other changes such as a lottery for juniors and seniors to receive season tickets, Wine said those plans have been put on hold for now.

"With regard with the ticket policy, [the lottery] is not going to happen this year," Wine said.

"What we decided to do is hold off and get a lot more student input. If there is student interest, we can definitely get started this year and hopefully it can go into effect in the future."
