Singer/songwriter Poe sure is Haunted, as the title of her new album suggests. On every track she sounds like she is channeling some other alterna-rock woman.
On the title track, Poe sounds like a happy PJ Harvey-plenty of distortion but less scary. Courtney Love's specter floats around "Control." The ghost of Liz Phair is also very prominent-she haunts nearly every track on the damn album. Tori Amos enchants, "Lemon Meringue." Poe is like a medium to a bunch of really pissed off women-a Lilith Fair of one.
But nothing beats the track, "Not a Virgin," which sounds like Shania Twain singing graphically about her sexual experiences. Now there's some brain candy.
The album is actually quite good, but it's hard to discover an artist when she sounds schizophrenic.
