Handspring Visor Deluxe

Designed by the founders of Palm, Handspring's Visor Deluxe is an excellent unit that runs the Palm OS. With 8MB of storage and all the features of the Palm OS, the Visor is definitely a contender. A stingier 2MB version is also available for an attractive $149.

The Visor comes in a variety of iMAC-ish colors and offers the added benefit of expandability. Versatility has made the Visor a hit among thousands of users. On the back of the unit lies a cartridge slot where you can insert hardware upgrades that can turn the Visor into an MP3 player, digital camera or vibrating alarm. I tested a digital camera and modem modules and both worked smoothly. Still, the modules can be bulky, expensive and maybe not worth your time.

The Visor's large screen was easy to read and write on. Though the back light was pretty weak, it got the job done. Like the Palm units, the Visor also has an infrared port that allows wireless data transfer between units. Synchronization with the Palm Desktop software was a breeze, and I was immediately downloading web content for offline browsing.
