Field hockey continues hot streak, wins 2 over weekend

From staff reports.

The field hockey team ran its season-best win streak to five at Williams Field this weekend, defeating Temple 5-0, Saturday and Massachusetts 2-1, Sunday.

The Blue Devils (7-3) started off quickly against the Owls (1-5), effectively ending the game before halftime with four goals. Courtney Sommer scored a pair of goals in the first half, and Liz Bateman netted one in the first and the lone Duke goal in the second to lead the Blue Devils in scoring.

Melissa Yuppa added the other Duke goal.

In the second game of the weekend series, the Blue Devils fell behind UMass (2-5) in the early going. Kristen Schmidt found the back of the cage just over 14 minutes into the first half to give the visitor's their only advantage of the game.

Keri Dunn tied the score at the 8:45 mark, and a Robin Merritt goal just past the midway point of the second half proved to be the winning margin for Duke.

Goalies Jenn Robb and Erica Perrier continued to split duties over the weekend, with Robb saving five shots on the weekend and Perrier two.

The Blue Devils return to ACC play this Wednesday as they host No. 4 Maryland at Williams Field. Duke remains in search of its first ACC win.
