OIT uses survey to choose six new, free channels for DTV

The Office of Information Technology has added six new channels to its DTV cable lineup: the Cartoon Network, the History Channel, CNN-SI, E! Entertainment Television, The Nashville Network and the Lawyers Communication Network.

OIT administered a survey to many students via e-mail in early June, and the results indicated that students preferred these networks. The students' most popular choice was the Cartoon Network, which is now channel 45 on DTV.

Students will not pay additional fees for the added stations.

The new channels, said Christa Stilley, project coordinator of finance and administration for OIT, allowed OIT to keep costs low while satisfying the students' requests.

"The OIT is trying to open the communication lines to the students," Stilley said.

Stilley plans to distribute another survey this summer to improve cable service for next year, as well.

Angel Marlowe, director of finance and administration for OIT, said the survey did not determine the number of channels to add-that was determined by constraints on the amount of equipment OIT could handle.

There is a good chance, she continued, that more channels will be added before Christmas, such as the International Channel and the NASA Channel. In order to add these two new channels, OIT will need to reengineer some of its equipment setup. It will also need to obtain additional receiving equipment for the NASA Channel.

"If there are other channels that [students would like] to see added," she said, "we'd be interested in knowing about it."

Many students are not yet aware of the new channels.

Trinity freshman Kate Pesce said that there already seemed to be "plenty of channels that cover everyone's interests," but added that she would like to see better coverage of campus events. Some students have also complained that network television is not free, except with rabbit ear antennae, which often do not get clear reception.
