Women's soccer suffers pair of losses to open ACC season

For the women's soccer team, bad things came in twos this weekend.

Duke opened its Atlantic Coast Conference season with a pair of losses, dropping a 3-1 decision to Maryland Friday and undergoing a 5-1 shellacking at the hands of Virginia yesterday.

"It was a difficult weekend for us," coach Bill Hempen said. "We've definitely got some things to work on."

Angela Hucles recorded the game-winning goal for UVa in the 19th minute of yesterday's outing when she received the ball in the penalty box and nailed it past Duke goalkeeper Isis Dallis. Both Hucles and Lori Lindsey scored two goals apiece during the matchup, Duke's first loss to Virginia since 1990.

In the battle against the Cavaliers (5-2, 3-0 in the ACC), the Blue Devils (3-4, 0-2) fell victim to a weakness that had plagued them in their previous losses. The 15th-ranked Wahoos outshot Duke, 21-4. In their four losses, the Blue Devils have been outshot by a margin of 79-19.

"We gave up some transition goals," Hempen said. "They were very effective when they were in our end, but I thought it was a pretty good game."

Lindsey began the onslaught early. Not even three minutes into the contest, defender Ashley Meeker dribbled the ball up the right side of the field and crossed it to Lindsey, who evaded the Blue Devil defense and drilled the ball into the upper left corner of the net.

Duke answered Hucles' first goal a minute later with one of its own, as midfielder Kari Juncker drove home a feed from midfielder Kasey Truman. That would be the only goal the Blue Devils would score on the afternoon.

The Cavs dominated the second stanza, limiting Duke to two shots in the half and pouring on three more goals of their own. Hucles struck again during the 58th minute, taking a pass from Lindsey and hammering it from the penalty box past the outstretched arms of goaltender Dana Piper, who had replaced Dallis, and into the lower left corner.

Lindsey lit up the scoreboard for the second time on a penalty kick in the 77th minute. Seven minutes later, Darci Borski capped the win, scoring UVa's fifth and final goal on a shot that bounced off the left goal post and into the net.

Terrapin forward Emmy Harbo tallied two goals, including the game-winner, in Duke's ACC opener at Maryland (2-3, 1-1 ACC). She kicked off the scoring by rocketing the ball home in the 13th minute. Her next goal, just under five minutes into the second half, secured the win for the Terps.

With her two goals and one assist, on Jackie Mynarski's 81st-minute goal, Harbo took possession of Maryland's school record for career goals-the senior has netted 47-and became the 11th-highest scorer in ACC history. Classmate Keri Sarver collected two assists on Friday and took sole possession of 10th place in career points in the ACC.

Midfielder Sherrill Kester notched the 13th-ranked Blue Devils' only goal off a feed from forward Sarah Pickens in the 78th minute. Pickens' assist was the first of her collegiate career.

Unlike in its other defeats, Duke did not suffer from a large shooting deficit against the Terrapins. The Blue Devils and the Terps took eight shots apiece.

"I never thought in that Maryland game that we were out of it," Hempen said.

Injury also plagued Duke, as midfielder Mara Brain, who sustained an injury playing against Hartford last week, did not make the trip. Recovering from a strained MCL, meanwhile, Dallis started both games between the pipes but did not play the entire 90 minutes in either outing. Brain should be able to play again on Wednesday when the Blue Devils travel to UNC-Greensboro.
