Cancer Survivors' Day

Complete with golden tickets, the Comprehensive Cancer Center's celebration of National Cancer Survivors' Day honored patients and their families with a "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" celebration. The day culminated with a viewing of the 1971 movie starring Gene Wilder.

About 300 people-cancer survivors of all ages, their families and friends-attended this year's event at the Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham. Educational displays about the center's treatments and facilities, as well as information about the disease, were displayed during the five-hour event.

Attendees were given Everlasting Gobstopper candy, and, as in the movie, five of the packages contained golden tickets redeemable for prizes.

A volunteer costumed as the "cancer fatigue dog" also entertained those in attendance.
