Wrestling remains perfect with 23-15 win on road at Campbell

The wrestling squad upped its perfect record to 5-0 Tuesday night with a 23-15 road victory over the Campbell Camels (6-6).

The match was a tight affair the entire way and came down to the final match where Blue Devil sophomore Alex Hunt downed John Black, 3-1, in the heavyweight division to give Duke the win.

With just three matches remaining, the Blue Devils appeared to have an insurmountable lead. But Campbell wins at 177-lb. and 190-lb. by John Christian and Hoss Rhoton, respectively, put the Camels back in contention with just one match remaining.

Previous to the loss at 177 lbs., Duke had strung together three straight wins. Sophomore Duece Harris-wrestling in his first match in a while after sitting out with an injury- came up with a 12-2 major decision over Lee Clark at 155-lb.

Freshman Bill Morris followed up his strong performance over the weekend against the Citadel with a 4-2 defeat of Campbell's Brian Scioli.

Junior Matt Mapes finished off the trifecta with a 24-9 major decision over Jonathan Lee at 167-lb.

Campbell started the meet off with an 8-4 win at 118-lb by Jason Hodge, but dropped the next two matches. Blue Devil senior Chris Heckel pinned the Camels' Abner Hughes at the 2:11 mark in the 126-lb. division.

Freshman Sean Meakim followed that up with a 7-2 win over Gary Hughes at 134-lb.

Campbell's other win came at 142-lb. where Billy Green earned a major decision over Nick French, 15-5.

Last year, the Blue Devils recorded a dominating 49-0 win over the Camels in Durham. Their five wins so far this season are just one short of last year's total number of wins (6-5).

Duke next takes to the mat Friday night at 8 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium against Virginia in its Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
