Blue Devil wrestlers off to a 3-0 start

Chronicle staff writer

The wrestling team launched the Clar Anderson era at Duke by jumping out of the gate to win its first three dual matches of the season. Anderson, in his first year at the helm of the Blue Devils, guided Duke to dominating home wins over Davidson and Delaware and a narrow road victory over the Virginia Military Institute.

Duke downed the Wildcats, 36-12, Jan. 8 to open the season and then dispatched the Hornets, 30-15, two days later. Jan. 13, the Blue Devils headed to Lexington, Va. where they rallied from a 9-6 deficit to down the Keydets, 24-22.

Leading the way for Duke with 3-0 records were Matt Mapes and Dion Santo in the 167-lb and 177-lb divisions, respectively.

Mapes and Santo keyed the Blue Devils win at VMI, registering back-to-back wins to stretch an 18-15 Duke lead to 24-15.

Senior Chris Heckel went 2-0 over break in the 126-lb division.

Next up for the Blue Devils is the Swarthmore Invitational Tournament this weekend.
