Top women's hoops prospect visits tomorrow

The Duke men's basketball team is not the only one on campus that will be entertaining recruits this month. The women's basketball team welcomes high school senior Krista Gingrich from Lewistown, Penn. to the campus for an unofficial visit this weekend.

Gingrich has narrowed her choices down to four-Duke, Notre Dame, Stanford, and Penn State.

"There are many things I consider academically and athletically," she said. "Academically... I'm probably going to major in a math or science, so I like them to have a good reputation and a hospital on campus. Things like that."

It just so happens that Duke is ranked third nationally in academics and has one of the best hospitals in the country located on campus.

"Athletically I like what the team has right now," Gingrich said, "how the chemistry is, where I would fit in."

The women's basketball team this year hopes to continue coach Gail Goestenkors' string of three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. Gingrich, a point guard, could be very useful in following in the footsteps of Kira Orr and Hilary Howard.

The women's basketball team has become accustomed to winning lately. They posted a 19-11 mark last year and hope to improve on that record this year. Gingrich is certainly no stranger to winning either.

"We won the state title last year and had a record of 32-0," Gingrich said. "We lost two starters, but we still probably should be favored to repeat."

Gingrich will arrive in Durham tomorrow afternoon and leave Saturday. She will be in attendance for the women's basketball team's exhibition game against Russia-Dynamo Friday night. Gingrich will likely make her decision during the early signing period, the week of Nov. 12-19.
