Knoxville, Tenn.--Prior to leaving for the Southeast Regionals Tuesday night, the men's basketball team had a surprise visitor at practice in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Former Duke star point guard Bobby Hurley visited the team during a one-day trip to Durham. Hurley, whose NBA career was interrupted Dec. 12, 1993 when he was severely injured in a car accident, arrived in town Tuesday afternoon and returned to his home in Jersey City, N.J., early Wednesday morning.
Hurley's recovery has been very encouraging, and he even took a job around the Washington Duke Golf Course.
"He ran a mile in eight-and-one-half minutes," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said Wednesday. "I got on him about that. I said, 'I could do that.' Maybe.
"I didn't have to give any inspirational speeches. Actually, I think our guys were laughing at him."
"He told my wife, Mickie, 'I feel tired watching [them] practice. If I was out there I'd feel good.' It shows he really wants to be [on the court]."
