Student government offers ideas to improve advisors

The Duke Student Government made recommendations for improving Pre-Major advising at its meeting Wednesday night.

The resolution, sponsored by Trinity junior Eric Solovy, stated that the Pre-Major Advising Center was making some positive changes, but more needed to be done.

The resolution suggests ways to improve relationships between students and their advisors, such as pairing students with faculty who share their academic interests. The resolution also recommends that students work with their advisors for at least two years.

Solovy also suggests ways to match students with better advisors. For example, pre-major advising should use student evaluations to determine whether to rehire advisors, and all advisors should attend training sessions, the resolution said. Faculty should have worked at the University for at least a year before advising students, Solovy said.

The resolution also suggests that the Pre-Major center work more closely with Peer-Net, a student-run advising service.

The resolution passed overwhelmingly.

In other business: DSG President Paul Hudson, a Trinity senior, reported on the progress of proposals dealing with freshman housing on West campus. Hudson said that the Athletic Department was the major proponent of maintaining freshman housing on West.

"The people in student affairs have been pretty up front that this problem is coming from the athletic department," Hudson said. Coaches believe that not having freshman housing on West may discourage athletes from coming to the University, Hudson said.

Hudson did not know when the matter would be resolved.

DSG also approved a statute allocating money to bring Tom Miller to speak on campus. Miller, a 1975 graduate of Duke Law School, is affiliated with the Competitive Enterprises Institute. He will speak on the health care debate.
