Searching for empathy in the humanities

When I was in eighth grade, I had an English teacher named Mrs. Johnson. During the last period of the school day, I would sit in the back corner of her classroom and listen while she led recitations of “Julius Caesar”or discussions of film scenes from “Amadeus.” Everyone in the class loved her.

When my sister became my brother

“Didn’t you say that you only had a sister,” asked my confused friend, Ben, when I told him that I visited my brother. “Yes, and he is now my brother,” I replied, a little guarded. Coming out to tell the world that you are transgender is hard.

Hurricane Joaquin is behind us, but its aftermath can still be felt. Here in Durham, we were merely deluged with cold rain, but in the central Bahamas, a massive storm surge flooded streets and enveloped houses.

Pro-gun is not pro-killing

In the wake of the tragic shooting that claimed nine lives one week ago today, President Obama observed that our reactions to mass shootings have become routine, even numb. At least in my experience, he is not wrong. I will never forget where I was when I found out about the Sandy Hook shooting — headquartered in Perkins and stupidly consumed with anxiety about an impending calculus final.

Duke in Durham

Duke in the fall is my favorite time of the year. The temperature has finally cooled down, the leaves are turning and there’s Duke football every Saturday.

One state, one Israel

Since the start of Israeli statehood in 1948, the country has been in constant conflict with its Arab neighbors and the Palestinian population living within and immediately outside her borders.

A peek into my closet

Tomorrow is Duke’s celebration of National Coming Out Day. Celebrated with a plaza party and the famous “Love = Love” shirts, tomorrow is the day for celebrating “Coming Out” and publically assuming my sexual orientation and gender identity.
