Ways to commemorate and volunteer on MLK Day in Durham

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is designated as a national day of service to encourage Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. The Chronicle has compiled a list of ways to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. and participate in volunteering activities at Duke and in Durham this upcoming weekend.

Today, the News and Observer reported that “North Carolina saw its COVID-19 numbers continue their week-long soar Thursday, breaking records for both single-day reports and hospitalized patients. Hospitals hit a new high point for COVID-19 patients for the third-straight day Thursday with 4,275 — a total that has more than doubled in the last month.” The New York Times reports that Duke Hospitals ICUs are at 100% of capacity — and that is now. Hospitalizations lag cases by several weeks. Meanwhile the Duke dashboard for last week showed this:

The Chronicle is reporting on Twitter that VP Kyle Cavanaugh has informed them that in-person classes are set to resume on January 18. Clearly, it is within the purview of the Duke administration to make this decision, and I assume that the decision was made in consultation with the appropriate faculty governance committees. I also assume that the administration is aware that this decision will likely lead to significant concerns for faculty, staff and students who are (or caring for individuals who are) at high-risk of severe illness from COVID-19 and/or who have young children who are ineligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
