This week's New York Times Magazine profiles the city of Virginia Beach, Va., labeling it the "new Motown" because of the creative rap and R&B music the area has recently produced. Just a three-hour car trip away in Charlottesville, Va., the Virginia basketball team (12-7, 2-8 in the ACC) sits in last-place in the ACC, seemingly desperate for the energy and innovation that comes so naturally to the state's musical acts.

It is interesting that in the same day my colleague Matt Sullivan berated Duke's fans for being naively, superficially and overly enthusiastic for basketball games, Joe Alleva--in a decision with which Mike Krzyzewski was implicitly cooperative due to comments he made over the past two days--took away 100 seats from undergraduates for tonight's game against Virginia in what seems to be punitive punishment for the weak decibel levels produced for Sunday's game against last-place Clemson. So are the Crazies an irrationally intense group or an underachieving, underappreciative conglomerate of rich, high IQ college kids?

With six high school All-Americans on its squad from all five positions, the men's basketball team comes at opponents at every angle. But with 1:52 left in the first half, the less-renowned Clemson Tigers (9-11, 2-7 in the ACC) were matching Duke's talent, tying the score at 27 after a three-pointer from Raleigh native Shawan Robinson.

After Kayla Chones sprinted ahead of the pack and layed in her 12th point to give N.C. State (10-11, 2-6 in the ACC) a 29-19 lead with 5:18 remaining in the first half, It became clear that No. 2 Duke was going to have to work for its 50th consecutive ACC win. The Blue Devils (16-2, 7-0) quickly turned it around, however, and out-scored the Wolfpack by 29 for the remainder of the game en route to a 75-56 win.

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The conditions were set for an upset. Fans were spilling out of their seats in what appeared to be 9,191 simultaneous tirades against Duke, the press row was so crowded that even Hall-of-Famer Jerry West (who was scouting for the Memphis Grizzlies) had to settle for a cramped seat, the heat inside of Alexander Memorial Coliseum was more analogous to a Georgia summer than the January 31 date would lead one to believe, and the energetic Georgia Tech basketball team came out firing, taking a 15-4 lead over the admittedly fatigued Blue Devils in the game's opening minutes. It became apparent that No. 1 Duke would have to fight if it was to keep its coveted ranking.

If anything, the state of North Carolina has been spoiled with sports success. The Tar Heel state has been a breeding ground for basketball talent since Dr. Naismith invented the game, producing talents such as Michael Jordan and Jerry Stackhouse. The state's college basketball programs rival, if not exceed, the prestige of any other state. North Carolina sports have even been immortalized in films such as "Bull Durham," a movie that made the Durham Bulls the most famous AAA baseball team in America.

Florida State's two basketball wins over then-No. 7 North Carolina and then-No. 10 Wake Forest last week should focus No. 1 Duke for its matchup with the perennial ACC cellar dweller, but the recent success of the Seminoles will hardly intimidate the nation's most celebrated program. It's probably true that the Blue Devils have nothing to fear from Florida State this season. But if any ACC team has a chance to break through the league's significant historical forces and become one of the nation's elite teams, it's the Seminoles.

If the ACC had an award for its best assistant coach, Duke's big man coach Steve Wojciechowski would be making quite a case for himself this season. This compliment comes at a curious time, because though awards for the Duke program are nothing new, before this season Wojciechowski's handling of the Blue Devil post-players has been marred by more criticism than praise.

ATLANTA--There is wide disagreement on whether the women's basketball (12-1, 3-0 in the ACC) team deserves its No. 1 ranking. The Duke doubters point out that Texas Tech has an undefeated record against stiff competition and that the Blue Devils were one Jessica Foley miss away from becoming the No. 7 team in the nation, a fact that Gail Goestenkors has publicly admitted herself. But in the Blue Devils 77-45 dismantling of Georgia Tech, few could imagine a similar performance by any other team in the nation.

In her days as an assistant at Purdue University, women's basketball head coach Gail Goestenkors schooled then-Boilermaker player MaChelle Joseph in the fundamentals of the game. When No. 1 Duke heads down to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. tonight, Goestenkors looks to teach Joseph, who now is the head coach of the Yellow Jackets, another lesson.

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Historically speaking, losing in the finals of the Great Alaska Shootout may be the best thing that can happen to the men's basketball team. After the Blue Devils tore down the nets in Anchorage in 1995, Duke went on to lose in the first round of the NCAA tournament, becoming the last Mike Krzyzewski-led college basketball team not to win at least 20 games. After the Blue Devils fell to Cincinnati by two points in the 1998 Shootout, Duke won 32 consecutive games.

CHAPEL HILL -- 13 years, 676 weeks and 4,745 days after then-head coach Steve Spurrier's team posed in front of a scoreboard that read "Duke 41, North Carolina 0", the football team finally laid to rest the most lopsided streak in the Duke-UNC football rivalry with a 30-22 win over the Tar Heels.
