Column: To truly compete with the ACC's best, Duke football must prove its worth immediately

(09/01/23 4:13am)

Head coach Mike Elko’s rapid, dramatic turnaround of the football program was, by all means, miraculous. I won’t beat a dead horse by recounting the Blue Devils’ every woe of 2021 (eight, specifically, from ACC play), but the season was as dismal as its conference record showed.

Column: After disappointing 2023 season, it's time for Duke women's lacrosse to begin its next chapter

(06/03/23 7:17pm)

After a fairytale regular-season run in 2022, Duke began the 2023 season with a No. 11 ranking and conference — and national — title hopes. With Tewaaraton Award nominee and First Team All-American Maddie Jenner, the draw control queen, star goalkeeper Sophia LeRose and attackers Anna Callahan and Eva Greco all returning for fifth years, the Blue Devils’ losses seemed minimal. They were poised for greatness, teetering on the brink of ACC success.

PHILLY SPECIAL: Leadmon's controversial sudden-death goal propels Duke men's lacrosse past Penn State, into NCAA title game

(05/27/23 7:21pm)

PHILADELPHIA— Sixteen seconds to play and a score tied at 15. Duke had the ball coming out of its timeout. As the clock ticked down, star junior attackman Brennan O’Neill was smothered by Penn State’s defense. He dumped the ball off to Garrett Leadmon, who fired off a shot as time expired; it went wide, and the game was heading to overtime.

Duke women's lacrosse breaks close-game curse at Louisville, extends season with first-round ACC tournament win

(04/24/23 1:34am)

With just under four minutes to play, senior attacker Caroline DeBellis brought the ball up behind the goal, moving to her right around the crease. Cutting directly toward her from the top of the eight-meter arc was sophomore attacker Carly Bernstein. DeBellis dumped it off and Bernstein followed through, breaking the 11-11 tie and putting Duke up — for good.

'We just ran out of time': Duke women's lacrosse closes regular-season with hard-fought loss to No. 6 North Carolina

(04/21/23 3:08am)

Even with a 1-7 ACC record facing the sixth-ranked team in the country, it was the Blue Devils who got on the board first Thursday evening. It was the Blue Devils who kept it neck and neck with their rivals, never falling more than two goals behind. And when that final buzzer sounded, it was the Blue Devils at a one-goal deficit for the fifth time this season.
