The women's volleyball team can't seem to get a break. Duke's season has been defined by inconsistency, and after sweeping the Demon Deacons last weekend, the Blue Devils (9-16, 5-8) fell into the same pattern Tuesday night, losing three straight games to No. 7 Georgia Tech (24-1, 12-1).

Playing for a drastically diminished crowd--a handful compared to the 16,000 it competed in front of last Friday night at North Carolina--but with the same heartbreaking result, the women's volleyball team (7-14, 3-6 in the ACC) fell to Virginia (20-5, 4-5) to start the second half of its season.

CHAPEL HILL -- What started out as a wipe out ended up as a heated competition without a definite dominating team. As the Tar Heel fans filed into the Smith Center for Midnight Madness with their "Got Roy?" t-shirts, they fueled the women's volleyball team to rally for five games before defeating a heartbroken Blue Devil team.

To compete: to strive to win. The women's volleyball team (6-12, 2-4 in the ACC) personified the spirit of competition as they went 1-1 this weekend against Clemson (12-8, 2-3) and No. 5 Georgia Tech (18-0, 6-0). Despite the absence of a totally positive outcome, Duke proved itself a competitor in the ACC, refusing to go down quietly against teams superior to it in record.

Yankees-Sox: we all know the outcome (may the curse continue). But this weekend a real competition heats up in ACC volleyball. After a long and mostly on-the-road season so far, Duke returns home this weekend for tough conference play in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils (5-11, 1-3 in the ACC) host another double-header Friday and Saturday night against Clemson (12-7, 2-2) and No. 5 Georgia Tech (16-0, 4-0) respectively.

The Blue Devils drowned a boatload of Pirates last night at the women's volleyball game. Cameron Indoor Stadium jumped last night as Duke (4-3) took out a largely successful Eastern Carolina (6-2) team in three straight games.

While Wally Wade saw some action, Cameron was heating up with the women's volleyball team (3-3), which took all three games in the Duke Classic, downing Charlotte 4-1, Buffalo 3-1 and Southern Illinois 3-0.

When the elite members of the WWF strap on those spandex pants, you know they mean business. Well, spandex has the same effect on the Duke women's volleyball team. Last season, Duke finished with an 11-5 conference record (24-10 overall) and the ACC preseason poll had them finishing second in the conference, outdone only by Georgia Tech. This year's team has a better idea.

While expectations for the volleyball team's chances of sweeping this weekend's tournament failed to pan out in that manner, the weekend in no way ended as a disappointment and did, in fact, display the definite strengths of this year's team.

From a certain angle on the beach lifeguard stand, one can catch distant glimpses of the Top Gun-esque volleyball games happening one beach over: the sand sticking to the sweat, the frustration and glory that somehow manifests from the sheer desire to conquer the beach.
