Dunleavy may enter NBA draft

(05/10/02 4:00am)

Mike Dunleavy, rising senior co-captain for the men's basketball team, will consider forgoing his senior season and enter the NBA Draft, recruiting expert Kurt O'Neill of EliteHoopRecruits.com reported Thursday. O'Neill's website, citing "several sources" close to the team, said that he expects Dunleavy to put his name into the draft, but not sign with an agent, allowing him to pull his name out and return for his senior season if he desires.

Double trouble: Men, women both seeded No. 1

(04/18/02 7:00am)

Having not lost a regular-season conference match since 1996, the men's tennis team again enters the ACC Tournament this weekend at the Millbrook Exchange Center in Raleigh as the favorite to come out on top. Contrary to past years, though, it may be a bit more difficult for the No. 14 Blue Devils (14-10, 8-0 in the ACC) to win their fifth straight tournament title. "North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Florida State are all good," coach Jay Lapidus said. "Those teams specifically could knock us off--there really is no foregone conclusion." Top-seeded Duke begins its tournament play today at 1 p.m. versus ninth-seeded N.C. State, a team Duke beat 6-1 in Raleigh during the regular season. The Wolfpack (5-19, 0-8) did not win a match in conference play. With everyone healthy, the Blue Devils should boast a lineup consisting of two players--Phillip King and Michael Yani--ranked in the top 50 in the country in singles play. King went undefeated in ACC play, while Yani lost only two matches playing at the No. 2 slot. The pair also combine to form the 21st-ranked doubles team in the country. "If we play at a level that we're capable of playing at, we should be able to get through without too much of a struggle," Lapidus said. "But there's always a possibility [we could lose]. That's why they play [the matches]." The one point Duke dropped against N.C. State and has had trouble with during the regular season is the No. 3 singles flight, usually played by freshman Jason Zimmerman. Zimmerman, lauded by Lapidus earlier in the year, has only won two ACC matches, one at the No. 3 slot, and one when he was bumped up to play No. 2 singles. Both Lapidus and the team hope the West Chester, Ohio native can regain his earlier season form. 'At this point, we have to play the lineup we've been using [during conference play],' Lapidus said. 'He's struggled the last quarter of the season, but I think he can pull it back together. We gave him a few days off to regroup.' If the Blue Devils beat N.C. State, they get the day off before playing the winner of the match between No. 4 Georgia Tech and No. 5 Florida State. Duke recently beat the Seminoles 5-2, but had problems against Tech, edging the Yellow Jackets 4-3 during the regular season. Lapidus said Georgia Tech could be dangerous for the Blue Devils because the Yellow Jackets have no real soft spot in their lineup. In the preseason, the Yellow Jackets were picked to be the front runner in the conference, but a couple of unlucky 4-3 losses, such as the one to Duke, killed that possibility. Should it make the finals, there is a good chance Duke will face second-seeded North Carolina, a team that almost snapped Duke's winning streak in a 4-3 thriller last Wednesday. The Blue Devils will have to be in top form to beat the Tar Heels. 'They're real good,' Lapidus said. 'If we make it to the final, I'd be surprised if they weren't there.'

Jeffries: Almost a Dukie

(03/21/02 5:00am)

About two years ago, Jared Jeffries woke up and decided to go to Duke. After a whirlwind recruiting tour, the lifelong Hoosier fan had been coaxed from his boyhood dream of playing at Assembly Hall with then-coach Bobby Knight and drawn to Durham, coach Mike Krzyzewski and Duke. The entire time the blue-chipper was looking at schools, recruiting experts had said the only thing that could get Jeffries away from Knight was his protZgZ. For a few hours, it looked as if Krzyzewski had pulled of one of recruiting history's great coups.
