Fencers upset 2 top-10 teams

(02/03/14 11:20am)

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>A day removed from narrowly upsetting No. 4 Notre Dame 14-13, the Blue Devil men pulled off another upset of a top-10 team Sunday when they defeated No. 10 Stanford on the final day of the Northwestern Duals. After losing to No. 8 Pennsylvania last weekend, Duke's men's team put an exclamation point on the end of its excellent weekend at the Northwestern Duals, storming to a 15-12 victory against the Cardinal to push its weekend record to 8-1. The women's team had similar success as they finished the weekend at 8-4. "These two victories against Notre Dame and Stanford boosted the morale of the team," head coach Alex Beguinet said. "The great thing is that they both came from different places; against Notre Dame both épée and sabre won by tight margins, and foil was able to limit the damage done by Notre Dame's deep roster. With Stanford, we knew that we needed sabre to really step up and provide cover for the other weapons, and they went a perfect 9-0."The win could be the big turning point for the Blue Devils as they hit the midway mark of their season. After opening the season with disappointing 2-3 and 1-3 outings by the men's and women's teams, respectively, at the Penn State Duals, both teams managed to generate success at the Philadelphia Invitational last weekend. The men's team, led by a combined 31-5 record from Charles Copti and Christopher Monti, stormed to a 5-1 record while the women's squad was able to finish 3-2. The men's team was able to keep its hot streak alive as they took down two top 10 teams on back-to-back days in Chicago. Saturday's matchup against Notre Dame was a close matchup, as the men's epee and sabre both defeated the Fighting Irish 5-4 as the foil fought Notre Dame hard for a 5-4 loss, holding the Fighting Irish off enough to give the Blue Devils the narrow victory. The following day, Duke continued to pile on the wins as the men's team defeated Stanford, San Diego, Cleveland State and Detroit Mercy. The 8-1 record signifies the improvements Duke has made, and a pair of victories against two top-ranked opponents could be enough to push the Blue Devils into the top 10. But Duke knows it can not be satisfied with just the past two weekends. The upcoming weeks will test the true ability of the team as it will determine whether or not the team can maintain its success. "Consistency is still the biggest issue with this group," Beguinet said. "There are moments of brilliance, but we want to see them perform a little steadier. While the men have excelled against ranked opponents in the past two weeks, the women's team—which finished 8-4 this weekend—is still searching for a signature win, as they dropped their matchup against No. 7 Northwestern Saturday 19-8 and lost to No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 5 Ohio State during last weekend's tournament. But Beguinet is confident the women will have success, especially after a 6-0 showing on Sunday, headlined by senior sabre Kodia Baye-Cigna's perfect 16-0 outing, pushing her weekend total to 21-13. Junior Sarah Collins led all the team with a 29-7 record in what was her first meet of the season."There's a reason those teams are ranked highly," Beguinet said. "There have been some close calls, but the group hasn't put a performance together where all three squads do enough to knock off a top school. We'll have an opportunity with Temple coming this weekend, so maybe a friendly crowd will be the catalyst they need to put them over the edge."Moving forward, the Blue Devils will look to add on to their momentum as they host the annual Duke Home Meet next weekend. As the only meet to be played at home, Duke knows next weekend can be an excellent opportunity to take its place among the nation's elite while taking advantage of having the home crowd on its side."Now that the team is performing at the level they're capable of, we're excited to get some matches in front of a home crowd," Beguinet said.

Stout defense, Dawkins' shooting leads Duke basketball past Elon

(01/01/14 1:01am)

____simple_html_dom__voku__html_wrapper____>GREENSBORO—Duke finished 2013 on high note Tuesday, rolling past Elon in its final game of the year.Led once again by the shooting hand of Andre Dawkins, the Blue Devils rang in the new year in style. Behind Dawkins' five three-pointers, Duke ran out to a 20-point first half lead and never looked back, routing the Phoenix 86-48 at the Greesnboro Coliseum."[Shooting the ball] felt good," Dawkins said. "When the first one goes in, that's when it's like, 'Let's see how far this can go.' But it's easy when you have teammates that are always looking for you, setting good screens for you and things like that. All I've got to do is catch the ball and shoot it."Although the final score may not indicate it, scoring did not come easily for either team early on, as the two teams combined for six points on 3-of-12 shooting through the first 4:18 of the game. Enter Dawkins.Coming off a 20-point performance against Eastern Michigan, the redshirt senior ignited the Blue Devil offense once again Tuesday. After Duke's slow start, he brought some life back to the Blue Devils by knocking down four of his five 3-pointers in the first half to break open the scoring. "Andre's been terrific," Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "You have to remember, he did not play basketball for a whole year. It's not like he was out and practicing. He didn't play basketball for a whole year."Dawkins' sharp shooting sparked a 22-7 run for Duke (11-2), which never let its lead drop below 15 points for the rest of the contest.Duke was even more efficient in the second half, knocking down 54.8 percent of its shots. The Blue Devils continued to have the magic touch for the long ball, as they shot 5-of-7 from behind the arc. Duke's bench outscored its starters 45-41 in the game, led by Dawkins' 15 and 11 from sophomore Rasheed Sulaimon. "[Rasheed and I] bring that boost off the bench," Dawkins said. "Scoring and then we can also provide a punch on defense as well. With Rasheed, he can get to the bucket with the best of them."With Dawkins lighting it up from long distance, freshman forward Jabari Parker adjusted his game to be a more physical force in the paint. He struggled from the field, scoring 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting, but Parker was all over the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds to register another double-double.In the past two games, Dawkins has shot 11-for-17 from behind the arc. His ability to knock down the long ball has opened things up in the lane for the Blue Devils as well as allowed Duke to pull down more offensive boards by spreading the opposition's big men. "With me, teams really have to focus on me and take me off the three-point line so it opens up driving lanes for everyone else," Dawkins said. "If we can continue to do that, we'll be pretty good."In the four games in which Dawkins has hit four or more 3-pointers, Duke has averaged 14 offensive rebounds—the Blue Devils averaged 8.6 in their other nine games. The Blue Devils also benefitted from their stingy defense, as they scored 25 points off 21 Phoenix turnovers.Elon (8-7) struggled to find an answer for Duke's defense throughout the game. The Phoenix shot 30.4 percent from the field in the first half, including 20 percent from long range—down from their normal 42.5 percent. "Their shooters didn't get good looks," Krzyzewski said. "Our pressure on the ball made it harder for them to get the pass because the ball handler has to be concerned about the pressure, so it's not as fluid. We just played really good defense today."The Phoenix's scoring struggles continued in the second half, as they converted only 28.7 percent of their shots and did not break the 40-point mark until 4:28 left in the game. The Blue Devils closed out the year with five-game winning streak. Duke will resume play Jan. 4th when they travel to South Bend, Ind., to take on Notre Dame in its first ACC contest of the year.

The road to Charlotte: Duke football vs. Troy

(12/06/13 7:26pm)

Game Synopsis: After struggling in back-to-back losses to Georgia Tech and Pittsburgh, Brandon Connette proved he was capable of stepping up in Anthony Boone’s absence by commanding another big offensive performance in a 38-31 victory against Troy. Connette accounted for 35 of the 38 points scored and helped the offense jump out to a 28-21 halftime lead. The Trojans tied things up in the third quarter, but Connette answered by leading a 10-play, 75-yard drive capped off by a three-yard touchdown run to give Duke a 35-28 lead. This game was one of the first in which the Blue Devil defense began to hold strong in the fourth quarter. Troy’s three fourth-quarter drives resulted in two punts and an interception by Jeremy Cash on the final play of the game to seal the victory for Duke.

The road to Charlotte: Duke football vs. Navy

(12/06/13 9:11am)

Game Synopsis: After Brandon Connette was a late scratch due to an ankle injury suffered in practice, Anthony Boone—in his first game back since breaking his collarbone four weeks prior—torched the Midshipmen and shook off any talk of not being physically ready to play in a decisive 35-7 victory against Navy. Boone completed 31-of-38 attempts for 295 yards and three touchdowns after finding out he would be the starter less than an hour before kickoff. After a scoreless first quarter, Duke took a 7-0 lead, Navy would answer with a touchdown on the next drive before combining for one interception, two fumbles and three punts on its final six drives of the game.

The road to Charlotte: Duke football vs. Virginia Tech

(12/06/13 8:39am)

Game Synopsis: In its biggest road test of the season, Duke traveled to Blacksburg to take on the then-No.16 Hokies and pulled off a 13-10 upset against Virginia Tech. Anthony Boone combined with Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas to throw eight interceptions, making the game a battle of the defenses. Although the Hokies nearly doubled the Blue Devils’ offensive production—outgaining them 387-198—Duke forced Virginia Tech to turn the ball over four times when it was inside the Blue Devils’ 35-yard line.

Duke football squares off with UNC for Coastal Division title

(11/28/13 9:11pm)

In the past, the Duke-North Carolina football game has been noted as a rivalry game and not much else, as the Tar Heels owned the series with a 21-2 record since 1990. But with the Blue Devils’ ACC Coastal Division title hopes on the line and North Carolina hanging 80 points last week, Saturday’s matchup quickly became a lot more meaningful.
