In its ACC preview supplement this year, the sports staff of this newspaper predicted that the Duke men's basketball team would win the national championship. It was not a consensus. I didn't even pick'em to go to the Final Four.

CARY--Not even three minutes into Friday's ACC Tournament semi-final between fourth-seeded Duke and first-ranked North Carolina, the Blue Devils knew they couldn't mess with the best. Tar Heel forward and ACC player of the year Lindsay Tarpley sped into the box and sent a quick pass to first team all-ACC midfielder Lori Chalupny, who floated a spinner into the air. Duke goalie Thora Helgadottir turned her head in one too many directions, and before she could turn back Alyssa Ramsey had headed in her first of two goals on the evening, this one to give UNC a 3-1 lead.

"That feeling," Lindsey Harding said, is what's going to push Duke to the top this year--that feeling of getting to the Final Four and losing. "I never want to feel that again, of just being so close but never quite getting it. I've never won any type of championship--in high school, AAU or anything--so just having that feeling."

Slender and shy, Daniel Ewing has established himself as the quiet man for Duke. He blends into the background amongst the monsters he plays with, and, occasionally, his game does too.

CARY -- In the first half of yesterdays quarterfinal nightcap at the women's soccer ACC Tournament, fourth-seeded Duke was mild. The Blue Devils had a corner kick land too far from the goal, a head-on free kick straight to the goalie and a couple of balls bouncing around with nothing but defenders from No. 5 seed Virginia circling them, a 1-0 lead in the Cavaliers hands.

The women's soccer team had a light practice yesterday, taking penalty kicks, watching video and running simple drills following the conclusion of a grueling regular season. Head coach Robbie Church even called in speed and conditioning coach Jeff Howser from the weight room to stretch out the sore Blue Devils.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Even with all the orange blanketing the mammoth Neyland Stadium Saturday, a bunch of blue poked through. But a poke couldn't overcome 99 bigger, faster men and the 104,772 folks surrounding them.

A rough ACC schedule and a solid regular season both come to a close tonight for the women's soccer team, when Maryland knocks on Duke's door for what should be a treat of a Halloween game.

With three games left in the regular season, the women's soccer team headed south to face surging Clemson Friday, buzzing with energy from last weekend's victory over Virginia. But No. 12 Duke (10-5-1, 3-3 in the ACC) was caught in a net of its own creation when it could not put any in the net, suffering its third shutout in six conference contests and falling, 1-0, to the Tigers (9-5-2, 3-3) at Riggs Field.

You dont remember staying in a room at an Omni Hotel. It's more of a stop-off--not too classy, but fine enough for a good night's rest. The lodging chain sponsored this weekends ITA Southeast Regionals, and the women's tennis tournament followed suit.

Red light. The Kid hadn't stepped onto the court yet. She was too busy being composed on the sidelines, the pep band blaring and the opening night lights glaring but she... she was just quiet. She made her way to the center circle. She took her secured spot. She bent her knees and slowly looked up toward center court.

Don't get me started on Carl Franks. Let's just start marching forward--right now. And that's what Duke's finally doing too, having made a bold, mid-season decision to fire the man who represented what's been wrong with Duke football for too many years, whether it was his fault or not.

On a rainy day in North Carolina, nothing outside is comfortable. Duke turns from gothic wonderland to soppy everglade, making a walk across campus worse than that moment after getting out of the shower, before the haven of a dry towel. Just off the quad, in a building tucked in a concealed corner beneath the glow of the Duke Chapel, Larry Moneta's office offers a bit more shelter from the storm. In a college of steel-eyed death, here is Dylan's man fighting to be warm.Just off the quad, in a building tucked in a concealed corner beneath the glow of the Duke Chapel, Larry Moneta's office offers a bit more shelter from the storm. Light blue was all the women's soccer team could see yesterday afternoon--up, down, all around. Whether it was tracking one of the many balls up in the air against the muggy azure sky, or trying to manage a header against almost six feet of cerulean-clad UCLA Bruins, or being enclosed by even more of those blue jerseys at once time, Duke could see everything but themselves.

Last weekend, the women's soccer team had an easy Friday lead-in to its big Sunday game, pummeling the lowly Campbell Fighting Camels before upsetting then-No. 4 Texas. But this weekend was a different story, as No. 8 Duke headed into the Nike Carolina Classic knowing it had a lofty duo on its slate: No. 18 Nebraska and No. 24 Kentucky.

Mike Schneider had nothin' doing on third down: nine yards to move the chains and not a receiver open as Duke charged into Western Carolina halfway through the second quarter Saturday. But the Blue Devils' freshman quarterback did a good job making the most of it--as he did for most of his first college start--and charged, head on and head up, into two defenders.
