Take of the week: Next season for Duke men's basketball looks to be something special

(04/18/23 8:57pm)

It has been a busy week for Duke. Point guard and captain Jeremy Roach declared for the draft April 10, but retained his eligibility, meaning he could still come back in the fall. Then there were a couple of big moves: First, star big man Kyle Filipowski announced that he would be returning for his sophomore season, then five-star high school baller Mackenzie Mgbako decommitted from the Blue Devils. News of the returning center in combination with both rising sophomores Tyrese Proctor and Mark Mitchell electing to return to the program — despite the loss of Mgbako and potential loss of Roach — means Duke will be a formidable squad come next season. In fact, there is a non-zero chance that, when all the dust from transfer news settles, the Blue Devils open the 2023-24 campaign as preseason No. 1.

The more you know: What has been the difference between wins and losses for Duke baseball this year?

(04/14/23 6:34pm)

It has been a year of ups and downs for Duke this year. The Blue Devils have come away with blowout victories against nationally ranked squads including Campbell, along with massive double-digit wins against weaker mid-major schools. The trouble for Duke has been in its ACC games, where the Blue Devils are just 7-7 and have yet to sweep an opponent in a three-game series. While the ACC is arguably the strongest conference in college baseball, Duke could have been in a much better position at this point in the season with a little bit more consistency.

Take of the week: Duke baseball needs to play more consistently to contend in the ACC

(04/10/23 4:14pm)

Duke has had a solid season this year. The Blue Devils probably won’t be winning the College World Series anytime soon, but it would be fair to say that they are outperforming expectations. This is especially true in midweek games in which Duke takes on teams, often mid-majors, from outside the ACC.

The more you know: The names to know for Duke men's lacrosse

(04/07/23 7:52pm)

Duke men’s lacrosse is on a tear. The Blue Devils have lost just one game this year, and they have beaten some of the strongest teams in the country. Recently, Duke came out on top in a 16-14 battle against then-No. 1 Virginia March 31, stringing together an eight-game win streak. As the Blue Devils continue their campaign that could very well result in an NCAA tournament run, let’s take a look at some of the key pieces of this year’s team.

Take of the week: Day-Wilson's departure is not a huge blow for Duke women's basketball's future

(04/03/23 4:06pm)

Despite Duke’s season coming to an end March 20 in a heartbreaking overtime loss to Colorado, the offseason has already been busy. Just three days after the defeat, redshirt junior guard Jordyn Oliver reportedly entered the transfer portal, and a few days later starting point guard Shayeann Day-Wilson followed suit, announcing her departure from the program on social media.

Duke rowing 2023 season preview

(03/15/23 1:42pm)

With the cherry blossoms blooming and spring on the horizon, Duke is officially back in action. Last year, the Blue Devils’ campaign was a strong one as they continued to boost the program’s reputation under the guidance of head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno. After winning its sixth-consecutive Carolina Cup by sweeping all five races, Duke continued to have strong showings in its competitions with an 18-race sweep at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invite. As a contender for the ACC title, the Blue Devils fell short of the crown, earning third place off an 82-point performance bolstered by a first-place Second Varsity Four finish. With their third-consecutive bid to the NCAA Championships, Duke placed 16th after three days of competition.

Take of the week: Duke women's basketball's offensive struggles will be its postseason Achilles' heel

(03/06/23 4:01pm)

It was a week of ups and downs for Duke women’s basketball. The Blue Devils opened their ACC tournament run with a tight win against North Carolina, a squad which swept Duke in the regular season. The victory in the conference quarterfinals meant that the second-seed Blue Devils would move on to the semifinals, where they played No. 3-seed Virginia Tech.

'Just a little better': After pair of narrow losses, Duke women's basketball takes familiar round 3 against North Carolina

(03/04/23 12:33pm)

GREENSBORO, N.C.—On Friday night in Greensboro Coliseum, Duke played North Carolina. It was the third matchup of the year between the two rivals. In many ways, it was a strikingly familiar game. It was another low-scoring meeting, complete with hard fouls, strong screens and stifling blocks. Somehow, the two teams managed to score fewer combined points than they did the last time.
