Tamarack

Fresh mountain air. Woodland trails on the faces of steep gorges. Roaring whitewater rapids. A dozen varieties of poisonous snake. The unofficial moonshine capital of the world. I spent my spring break in Beckley, West Virginia.

Awful Aussies

(02/14/02 5:00am)

It looks like Canada is not the only English-speaking country that has picked up on the worst parts of American culture. Australian filmmaker Ray Lawrence has offered us Lantana, a near duplicate of Magnolia--impressive ensemble cast, overwrought script, slow pacing and a title that references foliage.

This is especially true of battles tinged by politics. Based on a book by the same name, Black Hawk Down attempts to clarify an infamous 1993 raid in Mogadishu, Somalia--a mission that was deemed a total failure by American politicians and media for all the wrong reasons.
