Study determines mechanism of blood vessel growth to tumors

For Medical Center researchers, the excitement generated by their recent cancer findings is two-fold. In addition to gaining a better understanding of the mechanism by which some blood vessels grow into and feed tumors, they also found that a key protein formerly believed to be located deep within the cell is also present on the surface.

Medical Center gains 8 full-tuition scholarships

The Nanaline H. Duke Foundation will offer eight renewable, full-tuition scholarships annually to outstanding incoming medical students, announced Dr. Edward Holmes, dean of the medical school and vice chancellor for Medical Center academic affairs. These merit-based scholarships are part of the Campaign for Duke's effort to attract the best and brightest students and the School of Medicine's goal of improving its standing and financial aid.

Health system decides not to extend tuition aid benefit to staff

Employee benefit packages change constantly; the companies that administer them regularly compare their offerings to those of their competitors and sometimes alter their programs based on marketplace trends. In keeping with the practices of similar institutions, the Health System will not offer new employees assistance with paying their children's college bills, while employees of the Medical Center and the University will retain this existing benefit.
