Support Duke's troops

(11/09/04 5:00am)

We should support our troops, now more than ever. I have been away from Duke for almost a year now. I do not miss President Richard Brodhead, Larry Moneta or John Burness. I do not even miss Duke’s outstanding faculty. What makes me miss studying at an elite American private university is the out-of-this-world support staff it can afford.

Commentary: An American institution of higher learning

(03/03/04 5:00am)

Duke is run like a corporation. Usually, I am not bothered in the least by this fact. The management of our endowment, until recently unguided by any moral imperative, has allowed for the financial aid I am receiving. The efficiency of OIT has saved me from viruses many a time. I generally trust the University to keep the interests of our academics and students in mind when formulating policies.

Commentaries: The Search For A Good Bikini Waxer

(01/22/04 5:00am)

I have changed my opinion. I love sororities. This past Sunday was bid day, and marked the end of rush for the nine chapters that belong to the Duke University Panhellenic Council. Hundreds of freshman girls (though supposedly less than in previous years) finally found their true sisters. Of course, Sunday night was the time to celebrate the continuity of these institutions of oppression and segregation.

Column: Travesty for humanity

(10/07/03 4:00am)

Last Saturday, at 12:53 p.m. sharp, Nannerl Overholser Keohane engaged in an act so sordid I had to turn my head and look away. The photographers present did everything but that--they just kept clicking like madmen. Despite the moral abjection of the scene, these pictures are likely to end up in Duke propaganda, not in some fetish magazine. What, pray tell, did our beloved president do to evoke this kind of reaction? She helped raise the last wall of a Habitat for Humanity house, as part of a project called Blitz Build.

When Beer Pong Loses its Novelty

(08/27/03 4:00am)

In the middle of Tuesday's Chronicle you will find the calendar of what has been called 21 Night Stand (a name straight out of a Faran Krentcil column). This is three weeks of extra programming made possible by a $50,000 grant from the Division of Student Affairs. It is Larry Moneta's way of trying to improve the much lamented social scene at Duke--and I think it is great.
