Duke football is as good as its rushing attack, and the stats show it. Much has been made of the Blue Devil inefficiency in the running game this season. The criticism holds weight considering that Duke is now the 100th ranked team in rushing yards per game in the FBS, averaging 123.9 yards per game. Looking deeper into the splits, it becomes obvious that the Blue Devils rely so heavily on their rushing attack. Though the offense may have a more pass-oriented approach, the ground game dictates Duke’s success on the field.

Coming off one of the most exciting games in recent memory, Duke matched up with ACC powerhouse Florida State in Tallahassee on Saturday. Despite leading the Coastal Division, the Blue Devils were overpowered by the Seminoles’ talented offense. Here is an assessment of Duke’s successes and failures of the game.
(10/25/12 7:03pm)
The Blue Devils have relied heavily on the passing game this season. Who would blame them for that? Senior wide receiver Conner Vernon is one of the best ACC receivers in history and his counterpart Jamison Crowder possesses his own unique set of talents. Quarterback Sean Renfree is an experienced and accomplished passer. Combine the talents of Duke’s skill players with the absence of a consistent rushing attack and passing remains the team’s most effective way to score points.

Generic Script
(10/17/12 6:52pm)
Duke’s rushing attack has been a point of weakness for the offense throughout the season. The lack of consistent production from primary running backs Jela Duncan, Juwan Thompson, and Josh Snead has hindered Duke’s ability to succeed thus far against top competition. Against Virginia Tech, the Blue Devils running deficiency was highlighted with Duke only gaining 22 net yards on the ground. Despite large losses due to five sacks, the Duke run game was abysmal and must improve to give the Blue Devils a chance against North Carolina.

(10/10/12 7:17pm)
Having suffered the loss of starting quarterback Sean Renfree late against Wake Forest, Duke football put the onus of leading the team to victory on the shoulders of inexperienced Anthony Boone. Boone’s ability to use his legs to gain yardage as well as throw proved valuable to the Blue Devils against the Cavalier defense. The offense, although consistently strong this season, had to modify its approach with Boone at the helm. What is evident about this revamped offensive style from the statistics is primarily a dependence on long yardage plays for success and a need for increased turnover efficiency on both sides of the ball.
