And they're off.
While most Duke students will be spending their Thanksgiving break at home, the women's basketball team will remain on campus to host the 16th annual Duke Classic Nov. 29th-30th at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
There's something different about the Duke swimming and diving team this year. Despite the fact that they are the ACC's only non-scholarship squad, and despite the fact that the majority of their season gets lost amidst the grandiosity of men's and women's basketball, the Blue Devils have started off their season on the right foot, and most of the athletes have nothing but positive expectations for their team.
The swimming and diving team achieved mixed results in Saturday's tri-meet in Greenvile, N.C. The men's and women's teams easily defeated George Washington by scores of 174-63 and 162-78, respectively. The men, however, were dispatched by host East Carolina 141-95, and the women lost a close 132-111 contest to the Pirates.
After losing two straight games to league opponents, the volleyball team (9-17, 5-9 in ACC) will look to gain back some momentum this weekend with back-to-back home games against N.C. State (7-22, 0-14 in ACC) and North Carolina (18-10, 9-5 in ACC) Friday and Saturday nights at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Usually a date with the University of North Carolina is an occasion of much anticipation for a Duke sports team. However, in the world of swimming and diving, the favorite is so clear-cut that neither team even contemplates an upset when Duke travels to Chapel Hill tonight.
The women's basketball team started the 2003-2004 season off in style Tuesday night, easily dispatching the Premier Players 118-56 in their first preseason test of the year.
With its 3-0 win over the Wake Forest (18-7, 7-5 in the ACC) Saturday afternoon in Winston-Salem, the Duke volleyball team avenged its 3-2 loss to the Demon Deacons on Sept. 30th and improved its record to 9-15 overall and 5-7 in the ACC.
In three games, the Blue Devils have mended their admittedly disappointing season.
It was a bittersweet performance for cross country this weekend. Saturday, Duke's top-seven men and women runners competed at the 2003 Pre-NCAA preview meet in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Despite several strong individual efforts, the men's team finished 18th out of 35 teams, and an injury-plagued women's squad placed 12th out of 32 teams.
In sports, the term "must-win game" gets thrown around a lot. The bottom line is that when you're winless in your last nine games, eight of which were losses, every game becomes a must-win. When that game is against an in-state conference rival that has already felled two ranked teams this season, an even higher level of focus is demanded.
